Synthetic Ice Gets Closer to the Real Thing

Synthetic Ice Gets Closer to the Real Thing Synthetic Ice Gets Closer to the Real Thing Synthetic Ice Gets Closer to the Real ThingHockey players, figure skaters, and terrified beginners hugging the wall as they go round-and-round know the troubles that come with skating on ice. For one thing, its cold. If you want to do it outdoors, youre restricted to very cold weather. For skating rink operators, theres the issue of energy costs. Keeping water in its solid state amounts to the largest bill for rink owners, and while a Zamboni at work is a pleasure to behold, ice doesnt stay slick without it.All these downsides evaporate when ice is replaced with plastic. The first plastic synthetic rinks, which hit the skate scene in the 1970s, were somewhat better than skating on concrete. But they had to be coated with lubricants to be slippery and gave off a lot of shavings as skate blades cut across them. Now, using more advanced materials and techniques, companies like Glice are making syntheti c ice that is more like the real stuff than ever before.Glice co-founder Toni Vera, a hockey player and engineer, skated on an early version of synthetic ice in Canada, years ago. He came back from that trip and he couldnt get it off his mind, said Viktor Meier, the companys CEO and co-founder.For You Cockroaches Inspire Tiny Robots that Fly, Walk, Swim, DiveThis first outdoor ice rink in Brazil is made with environmentally friendly synthetic ice. Image GliceIn fact, it stayed on his mind for eight years. During that time, Vera experimented with self-lubricating polymers, to find the right ingredients to best approximate real ice. On traditional rinks, skates melt the ice as they slide over it, essentially creating a thin track of water. With Glice, skates release lubricants in the polymer instead. The exact formula remains proprietary, but the polymers that make up Glice, which fall between high and ultra-high density, are made with silicone and other additives. To best reproduce th e experience of skating on the real thing, Glice engineers had to do more than just aim for ices coefficient of friction. Instead, they repeatedly had skaters test out different versions. In the end, the sensation is always subjective, Meier said. There are different complex factors that work together maybe if you get one number going up, another goes down. You can only get it by feeling it.Vera and Meier also abandoned the injection molding used by other plastic ice producers and switched to pressing. A long press time with high heat creates a higher density, which reduces shavings. It also means that, aside from micro-scratches, the surface stays smooth for the duration of its 13 to 15 years of life. After that you can flip it over and have a brand new rink, said Meier.Professional hockey players and figure skaters attest to Glices closeness to the real thing.I made it my goal to personally skate on every product I could and find the differences in each product, said Dan Fritsche, once a player for the Columbus Blue Jackets, the New York Rangers, and the Minnesota Wild, who is now Glices national director for the U.S. I found myself having more glide, easier and sharper turns, and an all-around better experience than any other product, hands down.Real ice may arguably remain king, but only when its at its freshest state, especially right after a Zamboni passes over it.After fifteen minutes, real ice is scratched but Glice stays the same.Toni Vera, Glice cofounderIn the first ten minutes, that fresh surface is better, Meier said. After fifteen minutes real ice is scratched, but Glice stays the same. But the company is still in competition with real ice, and they hope to eventually match the performance of ice at its cleanest and freshest. They are also working on making their product self-healing and dirt ejecting. In the six years of its existence, Glice has delivered ice to more than 80 countries. Now outdoor skating is available in balmy climates like Israel, Peru, Iran, and Dubai, among many others.Michael Abrams is an independent writer.Read MoreA Military Robot Has Fallen and It Better Get UpUnique Gas Turbine Engine Powers Quieter, More Reliable DronesThis Robots Mission is to Solve the Worlds Water Crisis

This created land disputes and the increased potential for crimes to occur. Sumeria grew into the first known civilization in3500 B.C., establishing the first city-states and governments to help settle disputes. The rise of the saga Republic began in 509 B.C. The Roman military served as the primary law enforcers until about 500 A.D. Their presence in thestr eetsof cities and villages became an effective crime prevention strategy. From 428 through 347 B.C.,Greek philosopher Plato, a student of Socrates, introduced the concept that humans are inherently good. Thiswould lay the groundwork for future Christian theology, and it would still influence views of crime and punishment centuries later. Aristotle, a student of Plato and tutor to Alexander the Great, greatly expounded on the study of science and scientific observation from 384 through 327 B.C, whichwould later influence forensics and crime investigations. Julius Caesar welches assassinated in 44 B.C. and became the subject of the first recorded autopsy. The 1st Century Pedanius Dioscorides, a Greek physician, living in Rome, categorized various plants, their medicinal effects, and symptoms of poisoning from 50 to 70 A.D. His work,De Materia Medica, is considered to be the foundation of forensic toxicology. Roman orator Quintilian usedknown science to prove that bloody handprints did not belong to accused murderer. The decline of the Roman Empire led to destabilization in the western world and a return to thekin policingconcept and blood feuds when families and neighbors policed themselves. Clans were seen as responsible for their members and took matters of crime and punishment into their own hands. The 11th Century The Frankenpledge concept of policing introduced in 1035.All males over the age of 12 were formed into groups of 10 with their neighbors. They took an oath to capture and detain members of their clans who committed crimes under the supervision of a constable. Justices of the peace were appointed by the King to provide support to constables and Shire Reeves. Justices could issue warrants and hold arraignment hearings, and they could try cases that involved minor crimes. The parish constable system and the hue and cry developed. Males were appointed to serve as constables in a town for one year. When a constable called for aid, all men of the town would immediately respond. The call for aid would carry from town to town until a criminal was caught or the emergency ceased. The 16th Century The scientific method was introduced as a tool for investigating crimes. It prompted new means of gathering and examining the evidence. Various wes tern philosophers began to discuss the idea of the social contract in which the purpose and role of the government and the responsibilities of the people and the sovereign were explained. People ceded their authority to the sovereign in exchange for safety, security, and prosperity. This thinking influenced a more secular view of crime during the Enlightenment. How to be yourself in a world that wants to change you

How to be yourself in a world that wants to change youHow to be yourself in a world that wants to change youWhen Im in a room full of strangers, I never really know how to interact. I listen mora than talk, and I overanalyze every movement, word, and thought a hundred times in my head before I react to my surroundings. Just writing that sentence made me feel exhausted however, this happens more often than I would like to admit.Every day when I wake up, I aim to be myself I dress the way I want to dress, I wear my hair the way I want to wear it, and I walk out the door in hopes that my inner self will align with my external world. But, as much as I want to admit that I do things for myself, I cant help but wonder what others will think if I wear a certain piece of clothing or part my hair a certain way. I dont know why, but I cant help but create behauptung internal struggles that I can only see and feel. I dont want to believe that these thoughts are my truths, but they sometimes tak e precedence. While I dont compare myself to others usually, I cant help but feel that I have to act, talk, or look a certain way to be allowed to be a part of someone elses world instead of just trusting myself that I am enough to be loved for who I am.So, after feeling like this for far too long, Ive decided to try to put a stop to this way of living. Life is what you make of it, and if Im living through others perceptions, then I cant call this life my own. So if any of the above sounds similar to what youre going through, please scroll below to see how you can be yourself in a world that may possibly want to change you. Because, truthfully, the only person you should be seeking reassurance from is you and you alone. So lets do this.1. Take a break from social mediaIt can be hard to find your own voice when youre constantly consuming others thoughts and opinions. While social media channels like Instagram and Facebook are there to connect you with other like-minded people, they c an easily put a damper on your day when you see something that could trigger a negative thought pattern. To prevent this from happening, its best to take a break by unplugging every once in a while. Delete these apps, and put your attention into other things that will validate your voice and wont require validation from likes and comments (i.e. journaling, setting goals, talking with close friends on the phone, listening to inspirational podcasts, etc). Swapping your daily swipes with voice-affirming activities that were mentioned above could help you build your intuition and allow you to get to know yourself on a higher level.2. Resist the urge to constantly please othersSeeking validation from others is a surefire way to prevent yourself from living your best life. If you happen to overthink everything, you probably carefully calculate every move and word you say to appease others so you dont have to deal with the feeling of rejection. Even though rejection is a hard pill to swall ow, nothing is more exhausting than cherry-picking everything you do. Remember no matter what you do or say, youre not going to be able to please every single person in the world. Playing it safe wont allow you to chase after your dreams or make yourself be comfortable in your own skin. Its best to let go of the notion that its your responsibility to make everyone else comfortable when the only thing you should be responsible for is your own happiness.3. Only say things you meanNothing is more damaging to your self-worth than saying things you dont mean. This goes hand-in-hand with trying to please others because youre afraid to rub someone the wrong way. Being true to your values and ethos is the greatest gift you can give yourself. This allows you to be open and honest with yourself in ways you couldnt imagine. When something comes up that either bothers you or goes against what you believe, allow yourself to live in the discomfort and politely speak your truth. Usually, people sa y things they dont mean because they dont know how to sit with things that make them uncomfortable, so theyd rather avoid it all together by just doing what the other person wants.4. Get to know yourself betterYou wont be able to be your true self if you dont know who you are or what you want out of life. Take a few moments and sit with your thoughts. Write in a journal, take a few personality quizzes, ask your family about their history - heck, check your astrology chart. The more you understand your personality, your likes and dislikes, and where you come from, the more youll be able to gauge who you want to be.5. Try not to overanalyze and be fully present in every momentEngaging in a conversation with someone can be overwhelming for some when you overanalyze every scenario. Why did I say that? Are they bored with what Im saying? Think of something funny to say so they like me just might be a few things that would ansturm through your head. However, by having these conversations with yourself, youre refusing to be present.Ideally, you want to switch this dialogue to not critique everything you do but to easily flow with whats going on outside of your mind. Essentially, by being present, youre allowing yourself to focus on whats actually happening in front of you instead of focusing on the assumptions that youre coming up with.6. Be kind to yourself and appreciate who you areAt the end of the day, you should be kind and nurturing to yourself while youre trying to figure out how to be more like yourself. Dont beat yourself up or compare yourself to someone else when it seems so easy for them to be open and honest with their thoughts. Youre assuming that theyre comfortable in their skin, when in reality, they could be having the exact same thoughts that you are.Remind yourself to focus on your own journey. Do everything in your power to find your voice and take the next steps to live the life youve always wanted. As hard as it is to remember, nothing is more powerful than being yourself in a world that wants you to be like everyone else, when being like everyone else is, frankly, boring. This article first appeared on The Every Girl.
